The Blue Gargoyle Adult Learning Program, via public and private funding, serves individuals who need to improve their reading, writing, math, and computer skills before they go on to a job training program or to the GED test. Our student's skills range from early readers to GED preparation, and their ages from 16 to 75. In addition to our students, our community includes an enthusiastic assembly of volunteer tutors from all parts of the city of Chicago.

There are morning and evening Adult Learning classes. The morning classes are held Monday through Thursday and start at 9:30 a.m. Reading and writing classes are held all of those days and math is held Monday and Wednesday. The evening classes are Monday through Thursday and start at 5:30 p.m.

Individual tutoring days and times vary based on the volunteer's and adult learner's schedules.

All classes are free.

There are three steps to enrollment.

Step one: Prospective students attend an orientation. Orientation is given every Monday (except for holidays) at 1p.m. and 5 p.m. After orientation, prospective students schedule an appointment to take a math test.

Step two: Prospective students come in and take a math test.

Step three: Prospective students are interviewed by the staff. after the interview a reading test will be given.

If you are late you will not be able to take the test, so arrive a few minutes early. It is almost impossible to find parking near the Blue Gargoyle, so it is best if you take public transportation.

Please call the Adult and Family Learning office at (773) 955-4108 for further details about enrollment.

"In a lot of ways, I've gotten exactly what I wanted from the experience of volunteering at the Blue Gargoyle. I actually feel like I am doing something useful and I have developed a real emotional connection to the issue of inequality in education."
