Adult Literacy tutors are an essential part of the Adult Learning Program. After completing a 12-hour training, tutors are matched with a single student or placed in a group tutoring situation. Tutors primarily work with learners in a one-to-one relationship and tailor their lessons to meet the needs, goals, and interests of the adult learner. Student goals vary. Some have lived full lives and are returning to school in their retirement to complete a life-long goal of learning to read better. Other students have recently left high school but still want to improve their reading, writing and math in order to obtain a GED.

With the help of staff, volunteers design curriculum based on the learners' expressed goals. Tutoring pairs work on reading, writing, math, jobs readiness skills, and other areas that the learner wants to pursue, such as studying for a drivers' license exam, preparing for a work-related test, or writing a personal letter. Tutoring sessions' content are defined by the learner and the tutor, according to the learners' needs.

In tutoring groups, learners work together with other learners, tutors, and teachers to enhance their skills. Currently, the program offers a phonics and spelling group, math, games, computer, and reading groups for all levels. The tutoring groups meet after the core reading/writing and math classes. The Adult Learning Program strongly encourages learners to become involved with these co-curricular activities.

Serving over 350 students a year, the Adult Learning Program always needs more volunteers. With a day and evening program, we have a range of scheduling possibilities. If you have free time and a commitment to education, we'd love to hear from you.

Volunteers meet with students a minimum of 1.5 hours a week at the Blue Gargoyle. Learners and volunteers decide together on the days and times of their sessions. We ask that volunteers commit to the program for at least six months.

Volunteers in the Adult Learning Program begin with 12 hours of comprehensive training conducted in workshop format by the Literacy Coordinator and the Student Support Leader. Training includes large and small group work, case studies, and direct contact with Adult Learners. After training, each volunteer is matched (according to schedule availability, interests, and skills) with a day or evening student. Volunteers also have opportunities to work in a class with a teacher, or to lead a tutoring group. The staff of the Adult Learning Program provides thorough and ongoing support and advanced training opportunities as well as learning materials from the Program's resource library.

Through one-to-one tutoring, volunteers can work with a southside neighbor who is working towards his or her goals. By sharing your skills and enthusiasm for reading, writing, math, or computers, you can help change someone's life.

There is no previous teaching experience necessary to tutor adult learners at the Blue Gargoyle.
